October 1st 2022

The 14th Carne Trophy event took place in St. Helen's Bay on Saturday October 1st.  The weather was glorious and, apart from a strong breeze, conditions were excellent. We had 19 playing golf this year with the traditional Friday night draw in the Kilrane Inn seeing the following teams being fairly fixed drawn under the watchful eyes of a decent selection of Ryans and Burkes with following consequences:
Red – Ger Blake, Gráinne Ryan, Luke Murphy, Evan Rowan
Yellow – Michael Sullivan, Danny Donohue, Billy Meagher Jnr., Paddy Burke
Orange – Peter Ryan, Guy Wheeler, Susan Connolly, Gary Burke
Purple – Billy Meagher, Russell Burke, James Burke, Joanne Meagher,
Green – Fergal McGrath, Dermot (Jock) Kelly, Marc Farrelly
The usual scramble format was the order of the day and all five teams enjoyed the pleasant October sunshine had some very enjoyable golf and, in some cases at least, came up with good scores. Debutants Joanne Meagher and Even Rowan were playing for the first time, and four generations of Molly Cash’s descendants and friends were at the first tee in St. Helen’s to wave off the golfers.  We were joined later in the Kilrane Inn for dinner by Ellie Conolly, Mary Burke, Maura and Eithne Butler and Eoin Meagher.
And so to the results……
This fourteenth Carne Trophy was a very close-run affair.  It was won with a score of 71, one under par, with Team Green consisting of Fergal, Dermot and Marc winning by a single shot from team Purple’s husband and wife / father son combination of Billy and Joanne and Russell and James.  All three previous winners were delighted to be back in the winners’ enclosure once again.
Longest drives were by Gráinne Ryan and Danny Donohue.  James Burke pipped his mother, Susan Connolly, for nearest the pin on the 7th and first-time participant Joanne Connolly picked up the nearest the pin prize on the seventeenth.   Gráinne Ryan won the Gay Reilly Golfer of the Day award and Danny Donohue retained the best ‘family’ golfer title, thus earning the Carne Trophy Green Jacket for the year.
As always, absent friends were remembered - Molly O’Donnell, Gay Reilly, Pat Hennessy, Joe Conolly, Hughie O’Donnell and Colm O’Shea.
We look forward to 2023.
Finally, we acknowledge the staff of both St. Helen’s Bay and the Kilrane Inn for making this a great day for all.  See you in 2023.
