October 12th 2013
The 6th Carne Trophy event took place in St. Helen's Bay on Saturday October 12th. Conditions were super, the course was in top class condition and the weather was very pleasant, perhaps a little on the windy side, with a cool breeze coming in, unusually for St. Helen’s, from the Northeast.
Once again we were delighted to welcome some new faces with Gary and Colin Burke, Danny Donovan, Dermot Kelly and Paul Phillips all joining in this time. The format was the ever-popular scramble, with one team of four and two teams of three taking part.
Teams
Fergal McGrath, Ian McDonald and Guy Wheeler
Paul Phillips, Russell Burke, Dermot (Jock) Kelly
Billy Meagher, Danny Donovan, Colin Burke, Gary Burke
Continuing with the traditional close results, debutant and inspiring captain Paul Phillips led his team, which also featured Russell Burke and fellow debutant Dermot (Jock) Kelly, to victory with a magnificent score of 71, one under par (no handicaps were used on the day). This was just two shots ahead of Fergal McGrath, Ian McDonald and Guy Wheeler who would surely have won in previous years with a score like that. Another couple behind was Billy Meagher, Danny Donovan, Colin Burke and, enjoying his first ever round of golf, Gary Burke.
The Gay Reilly golfer-of-the day award went to Paul Phillips who also took the prize for the longest drive on the 15th hole. Paul became the fourth winner of the ‘Golfer of the Day’ which is awarded each year to commemorate our late friend Gay Reilly's passion for the sport. Other winners included Guy Wheeler for nearest the pin on the 7th and Fergal McGrath on the 11th.
Another great meal was had in the St. Helen's Bay clubhouse, with many thanks to Ian Brady and the kitchen team for ensuring everything was up to scratch, including getting the lads’ steak orders before they had even hit a ball!
Departed friends were also remembered, the great Molly herself and Gay Reilly were in our thoughts as always. There was a special toast for our dear friend Pat Hennessy who sadly passed away earlier this year.
The party then adjourned to the Kilrane Inn where we were all low handicappers for the pints, pool and darts. Roll on 2014………..
