September 25th 2021
The 13th Carne Trophy event took place in St. Helen's Bay on Saturday September 25th.  Unfortunately, Covid-19 put paid to the 2020 fixture, so it was great to be back after a two year wait. The weather was back to being kind again, the conditions were excellent and great fun was had by eighteen golfers in all.  We had 18 for the golf and the traditional Friday night draw in the Kilrane Inn saw the following teams being fairly drawn under the watchful eye of independentish adjudicator Commodore Ryan.
Alpha: Michael Sullivan, Dermot ‘Jock’ Kelly, Cliona Burke, Luke Murphy
Beta: Fergal McGrath, James Burke, Susan Connolly, Gary Burke
Gamma: Brian Buttimer, Ger Blake, Gráinne Ryan, Mark Farrelly
Delta: Peter Ryan, Danny Donohue, Anne-Marie Ryan
Epsilon: Guy Wheeler, Russell Burke, Colin Burke
The usual scramble format was the order of the day, and all five teams enjoyed the good September weather, a course in great condition and some fine scores.  We welcomed Michael, Luke and Ger for the first time this year and were joined later in the Kilrane Inn for dinner by a further four, long term supporters of the event, Brian and Sonya McGarry, Maura and Eithne Butler, and after that again by previous winner, Paddy Burke, who was making sure at least one of the Burke clans was behaving.
And so to the results……
This thirteenth Carne Trophy was a very close-run affair.  It was won with an incredible score of 67 (5 under) by Ann-Marie and Peter Ryan and Danny Donohoe, who were well clear of Guy Wheeler and Russell and Colin Burke in second. Many congratulations to first time winner (and first lady winner) Anne-Marie and previous winners Peter and Danny.
Longest drives was were by Gráinne Ryan and Guy Wheeler.  Despite 36 tee shots aimed (allegedly) at the 7th and 17th greens, there was no nearest the pin winners.  Guy Wheeler won the Gay Reilly Golfer of the Day award and Danny Donohue won the best ‘family’ golfer, thus earning the right (in principle at least) to wear the Carne Trophy Green Jacket.
Very sadly two of the Carne Trophy gang, Hughie O’Donnell and Colm O’Shea, both passed since the previous event.  Hughie and Colm were both remembered along with other absent friends, Molly herself, Joe, Gay Reilly and Pat Hennessy.
A special thanks was also given to Ellie Connolly who once again sponsored the main prizes. Thanks must also go to Paddy Burke for his great work in ‘upgrading’ the Carne Trophy itself by carving a lovely wooden base for it, to Guy Wheeler his ‘special’ balls, to Susan Conolly for sponsoring the goody bags, to everyone else who contributed spot prizes and to Peter Ryan who took most of the photographs.
Also, a big thanks to Jim, Mark, Sarah and all the team in the Kilrane Inn for looking after us in every way. The food, the drinks, the service and the atmosphere, all fantastic.
