October 13th 2012
The fifth occasion of the Carne Trophy took place in St. Helen's Bay on Saturday October 13th. Conditions were excellent, the weather was very mild and dry and the course was in top class condition. Once again, the format was a scramble.  As is now traditional, the result was very close with the winning team of Billy Meagher, Ian McDonald, Stephen Connolly and Marc Farrelly beating Joe Connolly, Russell Burke, Pat Shortall and Guy Wheeler by a single shot.  On the winning team Marc Farrelly was a winner last year, while the other three members were enjoying Carne Trophy success for the first time.
Teams
Billy Meagher, Ian McDonald, Stephen Connolly and Marc Farrelly
Joe Connolly, Russell Burke, Pat Shortall and Guy Wheeler
This year the Gay Reilly golfer-of-the day award went to Billy Meagher, but only just.  Russell Burke had the same number of points, but just lost out on count-back.  Billy became the third winner of the ‘green blazer’ which is awarded each year to commemorate our late friend Gay Reilly's passion for the sport.
Another great meal was had in the St. Helen's Bay clubhouse, many thanks to Liz, Donal and the rest of the team.  The steaks were as good as ever!  This was followed by a session in the Kilrane Inn which saw some epic displays on the pool table.  Rumour has it too that at least one member of the group fared considerably better on the dart board than they ever did on the golf course!!
