September 28th, 2024
The 16th Carne Trophy event took place in St. Helen's Bay Golf Club on Saturday September 28th. The weather was great for golf and the course was in super condition. Yet again we had 20 players including three new participants who were welcomed to the 'gang'. Theses are members of SHB - Sinead Cahill, Anna-Marie Murphy and Vincent Murphy, well known to Russell and Susan and Peter and Anne-Marie. This brings to 50 the number of friends and family that have participated since the Carne Trophy's inception in 2008. The now traditional Friday night draw resulted in the following 'biscuit' (thanks Cliona Burke!) themed teams:
Ginger Nut – Billy Meagher, James Burke, Anna-Marie Murphy, Eoin Meagher
Jammy Dodgers – Ger Blake, Guy Wheeler, Sinead Cahill, Paddy Burke
Hob Nobs – Vincent Murphy, Russell Burke, Anne-Marie Ryan, Luke Murphy
Custard Creams – Michael Sullivan, Peter Ryan, Grainne Ryan, Colin Burke
Toffee Pops – Fergal McGrath, Danny Donohue, Susan Connolly, Joanne Meagher
The usual scramble format was the order of the day, pints were had in the clubhouse at St. Helen's afterwards and we later gathered in the Kilrane in to be joined by Ellie Conolly, Maura Butler, Eithne Butler, Cliona Burke, Ciara Mangan and Billy Meagher Junior. As always, Jim, Mark, Sarah and the team looked after us exceptionally.
And so to the results……
This sixteenth Carne Trophy was, as usual, a very close-run affair. Team Hob Nobs came in level par with a very creditable 72 for third place. The Jammy Dodgers broke 70 with an excellent 3 under par 69 for second place, but the winners, with a wonderful 5 under par score of 67, was Team Ginger Nuts consisting of Billy, James and debut winners, Anna-Marie and Eoin.
Longest drives were won by Anna-Marie Murphy (12th) and Russell Burke (16th). Nearest the Pins were won by Guy Wheeler on the 7th and James Burke on the 17th. James Burke cleaned up on the individual prizes, picking up the Gay Reilly Golfer of the Day award and the best ‘family’ golfer title, thus earning the Carne Trophy Green Jacket and Metal Mickey for the year.
As always, absent friends were remembered – Tommy O’Donnell, Brian d’Eath, Colm O’Shea, Hughie O’Donnell, Joe Connolly, Pat Hennessy, Gay Reilly and Molly O’Donnell.
We are very much looking forward to 2025.
